road trip

I love road trips. I've always been a driving fool. I get it from my Dad. I've driven through 49 states (only Hawaii has escaped me since they haven't yet come out with an affordable amphibious vehicle). It's not that I won't fly - I've flown a lot, including four trips to Europe, but I think you miss a lot when you fly. And there's so much to see in this country. Even with all my traveling, I've only seen a fraction of it.

Our last road trip was in April to Florida for my Dad's birthday. I don't really count that though, since it was a quick trip and we drove like fools all the way there and back and didn't see anything except interstates and roadside hotel chains.  Before that, our last road trip was to the northeast in the fall of 2008. That was a wonderful three week trip that took us across a good part of Ontario and Quebec and down through Maine, then south all the way to North Carolina and back to Colorado. The fall colors were gorgeous and I got to add three states I had never been to to my list - Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire. That was my first trip through Quebec as well, bringing the number of Canadian provinces/territories I've been to to five.

I have a "milestone" birthday coming up next year (a lady never reveals her age, but let's just say it's a big one) and more than anything, I want to take a road trip. But this time, I want to only take secondary roads - no interstates. I think it would be so much fun to take some of the cross-country roads that existed before the interstate system and to stay in those 50s era motels that dot those roads even to this day. And best of all, just think of how many second hand, thrift, and vintage stores we could hit along the way! Probably more than our little VW Rabbit could handle, but hey, we can always ship stuff home!

Of course, since I left my job, to say the least, our income is not steady. Makes saving for this kind of trip difficult. But that's my goal. Wish me luck!

And if anyone has a favorite thrifting spot that is off the beaten path, I'd love to hear about it. I want to start compiling a list now.

  1. I would love to take a big long road trip!! I wish my husband was free from work so week could roam around together. Now, that I quit my job - I want everyone else to quit too - Which is stupid since his salary keeps the roof over our heads :)I saw some great thrift shops in southern Illinois but I can't remember the name of the town right now. I will get back to you when I think of it.
